On Friday Feb 12 WCCT is
holding a special event at Otatara Pa, on Springfield Rd, more or
less behind the EIT in Taradale. The event is called “Maori Motown”
and will feature some of the best Maori voices in the country.
The performers will be
Maori, and many of the numbers they sing will be in Te Reo Maori.
Our artists include Frankie Stevens – who will be backed by his
daughters; Brannigan Kaa, well known to viewers as a judge of Maori
TV’s talent shows – Brannigan will perform James Brown numbers;
Rewa Ututaonga, a truly extraordinary voice – Rewa will perform as
‘Aretha Franklin’; Thomas Stowers, of ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ fame,
another amazing voice – Thomas is ‘Barry White’ for the night; Piri
Prentice & Toi Hautu – Piri was a well known local performer in the
Motown era with his band ‘The Shadracks’. We also have a fantastic
band, backing singers, and dancers.
The event is free to
students and only $10 to adults. It starts at 5.00pm and finishes at
8.30pm. There will be modestly priced food on site but people are
free to bring a hamper. There are bus stops at the EIT and at
Waiohiki Marae. We will have good security and Maori wardens on
site. If its wet we will shift to the EIT.
Tickets can be purchased
through TicketDirect or at the gate
